How to plan a Thanksgiving trip

Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday 26 November. The crush is Wednesday outbound and Sunday return. Fly Tuesday, or stay through Monday, if you can. Book the room in the walkable bit and the one meal that needs a table. Treat the weekend like a holiday long weekend with a fixed Thursday in the middle, not like a cheap November city break.

The calendar is the crush

Monday 23 through Wednesday 25 November are the outbound pile-up. Sunday 29 is the return. Tuesday flights and a Monday night on the far side are the moves that miss both. A Wednesday 4pm departure into Thursday dinner is how the trip starts in a security line. How far ahead to book still applies: this week behaves like peak season even in cities that are easy in mid-November.

If you are driving, the same days jam the highways. Leave at dawn or after the evening wave. Four to five hours is a comfortable day; six on Wednesday is a parking lot. Road-trip hours do not get a holiday exception.

A city Thursday, not a cheap November

New York, Chicago, and New Orleans stay open: parades, restaurants that take a name, neighborhoods you can walk after a heavy meal. This is not the week to discover a 40-room town. Boston and Washington, DC work for a historic-city walk if that is the point. A Chicago weekend and a New York weekend are the pacing; stretch Thursday into the middle and keep Friday light.

Family trips drop to one anchor a day and a reset — the hotel, a park, leftovers. Orlando is a park week that happens to include Thursday; the park is the whole day. Mix a Magic Kingdom day with a downtown dinner across town and bedtime collapses. See planning a family vacation.

What to book

The room in the walkable bit, and the one Thursday or Friday table that disappears. Grocery breakfast if you have a kitchen. The parade route only if someone in the group cares enough to stand in the cold — otherwise watch it on a screen and take the morning for a neighborhood walk.

Flights: Tuesday in, Monday out, or a drive. Holiday fares do not get cheaper if you wait through the third week of November. Set a ceiling and buy when it hits. Cheapest time to book flights is the ticket math; this week is the exception that fills.

  • Fly Tuesday or stay through Monday.
  • Book the walkable room and one table.
  • One anchor a day. Thursday is the meal, not a museum stack.

The usual ways it breaks

Wednesday flights. A Sunday 4pm return. A hotel two train lines out because November looked cheap in the listing photos. Two paid things on Friday because Thursday was "just dinner."

If the only dates are Wednesday to Sunday, plan Wednesday as transit and Sunday as transit. The trip is Thursday night, Friday, and Saturday. That is a Labor Day shape with a feast in the middle. Drop an ambition, not the sleep.

New Orleans on this weekend is a walkable meal and a neighborhood, not a second city. A family week in Orlando is a park calendar that happens to include Thursday. Either works. Mixing both into five days does not.
