Best time to visit Bali

Bali writes April to October as the dry season, with July and August busiest. Mornings are clearer, the Bukit cliffs are less slippery, and rooms in Canggu and Ubud sell out on weekends. May and September are the same weather with fewer villa markups. A first visit in those two shoulders is the default if you can move the dates.

July and August are an Australian and European school-break product. The same Ubud sunrise at Tegallalang that is empty in May is a parking lot in late July. If those are the dates you have, sleep farther out — Sidemen instead of central Ubud, Uluwatu instead of Seminyak — and start temple mornings before 7am. How far ahead to book is tighter for villas than for a city hotel.

November to March is daily rain, usually a heavy afternoon, not an all-day washout. Hills are greener. Rates drop. A beach week still works if you put the surf or the pool in the morning and accept a long lunch indoors. It is a poor week if the whole plan is a boat to Nusa Penida every other day; the channel gets rough.

Nyepi, the Balinese new year, shuts the island: no traffic, no lights visible from the street, and the airport closed for 24 hours. In 2027 that is 8–9 March. The ogoh-ogoh parade is the evening before. Do not book a flight on Nyepi day. Hotels stay open and keep guests inside. If you want that, arrive a day early. If you do not, pick any other week in March.

A week lets you split Ubud and one coast. Ten to twelve days if you add the Gilis or Nusa Penida. Ubud is inland, cooler, no beach. Canggu and Seminyak are surf and restaurants. Uluwatu is clifftop and quieter. Driving between them in traffic eats a morning. Sleep two places. Do not sleep in three.

Hire a driver by the day. Scooters are common and a leading way visitors get hurt. Grab and Gojek work in most areas and are restricted in some. A honeymoon that wants one slow base should pick Uluwatu or Sidemen, not a different hotel every two nights. Second week of May 2027: three nights Ubud, sunrise at the terraces once, then four nights Uluwatu for the temple at sunset and a beach morning. Book the Ubud nights first in dry season. Leave one afternoon unplanned in each base. Skip a day trip to Nusa Penida if the channel looks ugly that morning.

If the week you have is mid-January, keep the two bases, start earlier, and put a spa or a long lunch in the 2pm rain. Do not add a third peninsula. Thailand is the other Southeast Asia calendar if the dates you have are Bali’s wet months and you would rather be dry.
