Best time to visit Thailand

November to February is cool and dry in Bangkok, and the peak season. March to May often runs above 95°F. Rain comes June to October in short afternoon storms. Thailand is two coasts: the Andaman side (Phuket, Krabi) is wet while the Gulf (Samui) can be drier, and the reverse later in the year. Three days in Bangkok is a complete trip. Pick the coast from the month.

The city window is cool and dry

Bangkok writes November to February as cool and dry, and the peak season. Temples at 8:30am are still hot, though they are survivable, while March to May is very hot, often above 95°F, and the Grand Palace at noon is a mistake. June to October is rain in short, heavy bursts, usually after lunch, and the BTS and the river boats still beat any taxi. Three days covers the temples, the markets, and two dinners, while five adds Ayutthaya.

Shoulders and knees covered at Wat Phra Kaew, because the dress code is enforced, and go at opening while Wat Pho next door is still quiet. Chatuchak runs on weekends only. Sleep in Sukhumvit (Asok to Thong Lo) for the BTS and hotels, or Riverside if the temples are the point. How many things per day still holds: one temple cluster in the morning, a boat or a market, a long dinner.

Two coasts, not one monsoon

A Thailand beach week runs on its own calendar, because the two coasts take the monsoon at opposite ends of the year. The Andaman coast, meaning Phuket, Krabi, and the west, takes the southwest monsoon from roughly May to October, so the dry window there is November to April. The Gulf coast, Samui and Phangan, often runs the other way: more rain from October into early winter, and a usable stretch through the northern-hemisphere summer when the Andaman is wet.

Arriv maps Bangkok and leaves the islands to somebody else. If the dates you have are July, the Gulf is usually the drier coast, and Bangkok is still a three-day city in the rain. If the dates are January, the Andaman is the classic beach week and Bangkok is hot but dry. Pick the island from the month, because picking it from a postcard is how people book a week of rain. Bali has a different dry season, April to October, if the trip could be either country.

  • November to February is Bangkok’s cool-dry peak, so book the Grand Palace morning.
  • March to May is heat, so take the temples at opening and the afternoons indoors.
  • June to October brings city storms after lunch, when the Andaman coast is the wet one.
  • The Gulf, meaning Samui, is often the drier beach in northern-hemisphere summer.

What three days in Bangkok holds

Day one: river and old town, Grand Palace at opening, Wat Pho, orange-flag boat. Day two: Chatuchak if it is a weekend, or Ayutthaya if you have a fifth day; otherwise a neighborhood and a rooftop that you do not need. Day three: one more temple or a market, fly or take the train onward. Traffic is the enemy. Plan around the BTS, the MRT, and the river.

A first Thailand trip that tries Bangkok plus two islands in seven days spends most of the week in terminals. Bangkok plus one coast is the version that holds together. A multi-city trip runs the same math as Europe: each extra pin costs a day. Here the pin is a domestic flight, which costs a little more of the day than a train would.

A sample week in 2026

Second week of November 2026: three nights Bangkok, temples in the morning, then a flight to the Andaman if the trip wants a beach. Book the Bangkok hotel and the palace morning before the island. If the week you have is August, keep Bangkok as the city, put storms in the afternoon plan, and look at the Gulf rather than Phuket for the beach days.

The best time of year essay is the monsoon split in one paragraph, while this page is Thailand’s two coasts and a city that is always hot. Japan is the other Asia calendar if the dates you have are March blossoms or November maple and you would rather be there.
