Christmas markets in Europe

Most city markets open in the last week of November 2026 and run through 23 December, some into the first days of January. Advent Sunday in 2026 is 29 November. The two weeks after opening are the ones with lower rates and the stalls already up. Christmas week and New Year’s Eve jump. Paris in the first half of December is still a cheap month relative to May, then the jump.

A market trip is an evening product. You need daylight for the castle, the bridge, or a museum, then the stalls after 4pm. Three nights gives you two full darks. Two nights is one evening and a travel day. How to plan a long weekend is the skeleton: Friday landing, one Saturday anchor, Monday as the buffer. Here the Saturday anchor is a morning at the castle and a late market, not a 2pm reservation.

Prague writes December as Christmas markets with cold, short days. Old Town Square and the castle complex are the two clusters. Cross Charles Bridge before 8am; by ten it is shoulder to shoulder in every season, including this one. Two days covers the castle, the bridge, and the old town. Four adds Vyšehrad and a beer hall that is not on the square. January and February are cheaper and the stalls are gone.

Copenhagen is dark by 4pm in winter, which is when the candles and Tivoli after dark earn the trip. Tivoli closes for parts of spring and autumn; check the December calendar before you build a day around it. Three days covers the center and a harbor walk. Paris is the Tuileries market, department-store windows, and the same museum spine as any other month. Louvre closed Tuesdays. A Paris couples week still maps the days; swap an evening for the stalls.

The room, then the flight. Prague’s old-town hotels and Copenhagen’s Indre By fill the way a US holiday weekend fills a 40-inn town. How far ahead to book is the same rule, with less inventory. Timed entries — Prague Castle, Louvre, a popular Copenhagen restaurant — go on the calendar. Mulled wine does not.

Do not add a second city on a four-night trip. The hop after dark in December is a lost evening, which is the product you came for. Ten days in Europe can hold Prague and Vienna on a longer winter trip; four nights cannot. Thanksgiving is the US weekend just before this window; do not try to stack both unless you live in the eastern US and the Europe flight is overnight Wednesday.

Arrive Prague 3 December, leave 7 December. Sleep near the old town or Vinohrady, not on the square. Morning at the castle one day, Vyšehrad or a museum the next, stalls both evenings. Book the hotel in October. If those dates are gone, the second week of December is still the market, with more people.

If Prague is sold, Copenhagen in the first half of December is the darker, design-and-pastry version, or Paris if museums are the daytime plan. Northern lights are a different December trip — Iceland, not a market square. Do not combine them in four nights.
