Group trips

How does a group decide where to go?

Have everyone submit a budget ceiling and the dates they can travel before anyone names a destination. Those two constraints usually leave two or three viable options, and a vote between three named candidates closes in a day. An open question about where to go can run for weeks because every answer is still possible.

Budget is the constraint people avoid stating, and it's the one that decides the trip. Somebody in the group has a much lower ceiling than the loudest suggestion, and finding that out after a house is booked is worse for everyone than finding out first. Collecting a number privately from each person makes it a fact rather than a confrontation.

Flight time is the second filter. A destination that is four hours for six people and eleven for two is a different trip depending on who you ask, and it's worth weighting by who has the longest journey.

Once the list is down to three, vote and move. The quality difference between the top two candidates is almost always smaller than the cost of another two weeks of deliberation.
